Fall prevention at home
Fall is very dangerous and causes injuries, it can happen to all ages, what can we do to reduce the risk of falls?
There are many things we can do to make our home safe
General instructions
- Turn on lights when you go to a dark place
- Use good lighting in all rooms
- Set up your furniture properly to have a clear path
- Avoid walking on wet floors
- If any of your floors are uneven, fix them
- Keep items that you use often in easy to reach
- Add contrast paint to mark handrails, first&last step of stairways and edges of each step
- If you use a step ladder, make sure that it is fully opened don’t climb a closed step ladder, ask someone to hold it for you until you finished, make sure that the step ladder is locked properly, and finally, if there are pets or kids around you be aware of where they are or just delay this mission as much as you can or wait after they are asleep What can we do In the kitchen?
- clean any spills immediately
- Keep electrical cords out of the way
- If you need to reach something high, use a strong step stool that has a grab bar
- If you must use floor wax, use non-skid wax
What can we do in the bathroom?
- Clean up any water spills as soon as it happens
- Use non-slip mats on the floor of the shower
- Attach bath mats securely with double-sided non-slip rug tape
- Install grab bars by the toilet, the tub, and the shower, don’t use towel bars as grab bars.
What can we do in the bedroom?
- do not use any sheets that are too big for your bed, they shouldn’t hang down onto the floor
- Have a firm chair that has side arms to help you while you get dressed
- Make sure that you have a light that is easy to reach
What if there are stairs in your home, these are the precautions to avoid falling.
- Make sure that there are light switches at the bottom and the top of the stairs
- Do not leave any items or toys on the stairs, make sure it is empty before you use it
- Install non-slip stair treads on all stairs
- Install handrails on both sides as long as the stairway
- Avoid any throw rugs at the top or the bottom of the stairs
- Use carpet tape to attach carpet to the floor properly, fix any carpet that is loose or worn
What can I do outside of my home?
- Trim any bushes on the bath to your home
- Remove anything that might you trip while walking through a door
- Use bright outdoor lighting
- Fix any cracks on the driveways & walkways
- Make sure that both sides of any steps have a handrail
- Use sand or salt on walking paths during winter
- Clean up any spills (grease or oil ) in your garage.
- Tips for you
- wear low heal shoes and have a rubber bottom
- Wear comfortable shoes and fit you well
- If you need tools that can help you use it like (canes, walkers, scooters, crutches)
- Review your medicine and know if you take one causes dizziness
